Hard words to rhyme and how to handle them

Last updated · Written by The Rhyme Game Wiki

Quick answer

Some words have no common perfect rhyme. When one lands in The Rhyme Game, use a near rhyme on the stressed vowel, split the word into two shorter words that sound alike, or rewrite the line so a different word closes the bar. Never freeze. Keep the beat moving.

Short explanation

Hard words are a normal part of freestyle. Skilled rappers do not always find a perfect rhyme. They use tricks that sound smooth at speed.

The word lists below are starting points. Use the Rhyme Finder to test others.

Step by step: rescue a hard word

  1. Say the stressed vowel

In "orange" the stress is on the first syllable, "or". Rhymes that match that vowel, such as "storage", can work.

  2. Try a split rhyme

Break the word into two or three short words that sound alike when spoken fast. "Silver" can pair with "kill her".

  3. Use a near rhyme

Keep the vowel and relax the consonants. This gives you many more options. See perfect rhymes versus near rhymes.

  4. Rewrite the bar

If you control the line, move the hard word earlier and close the bar with an easy word. In Last Only mode you can do this freely.

  5. Practice before the session

Pick two hard words per week. Prepare one answer for each and use it.

Examples

Orange with a split rhyme

"I painted the whole wall orange / then I hung the picture on a door hinge". Played at speed, the pair lands close to rhyme.

Silver with a near rhyme

"Chain around my neck turning silver / every time I step in I am a killer". The vowel and rhythm line up.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping to search

Silence on beat four ends the flow. Land anything on time and move on.

  • Using a rhyme that clashes with the stress

The stressed syllables must match. A mismatch is obvious even if the letters look right.

  • Assuming the game controls the words

Official word lists rarely use extreme words in beginner lists. Choose a word list that matches your level.
