How to play The Rhyme Game

Last updated · Written by The Rhyme Game Wiki

Quick answer

Open the game, tap Play, choose a word list, a rhyme scheme and a beat, then rap. A bouncing ball marks every beat. When the ball reaches a rhyme word, say that word on beat four and fill the three beats before it with anything that leads into it.

Short explanation

The Rhyme Game is a freestyle rap training app made by Creative Rhythm. It shows rhyme words in time with a beat so you only solve one small problem at a time: what can I say before this word arrives?

This page follows the flow described on the official how to play page. It covers the official app and the browser version at play.therhymegame.com. It does not describe other sites that borrow the name. For those, read games like The Rhyme Game.

Set up Beat 1 the line Beat 2 and lean in Beat 3 night Beat 4
One bar has four beats. You build the line on beats one to three, then land the rhyme on beat four.

Reading the grid

The gameplay screen shows five bars at a time. Each bar is one line of your verse and is four beats long. The bouncing ball hops across the beats in time with the music.

  • The rhyme words sit at the end of each bar, on the fourth beat.
  • Words that rhyme with each other share a color, so you can read the scheme at a glance.
  • Your job is the three beats before each word. Say anything that sets up the rhyme: a thought, a joke or a story.

Step by step: your first game

  1. Tap Play

The gold Play button on the home screen opens the Customize Your Game screen.

  2. Pick a word list

A word list is the pool of rhyme words the game gives you. Beginner friendly lists use short, common words. Harder lists get more specific.

  3. Pick a scheme and a fill mode

The scheme says which lines rhyme (AABB, ABAB, AAAA). The fill mode says how many rhyme words you see. For a first game use AABB with All Words.

  4. Pick a beat and a length

Choose a beat from the Beat Library, then choose 8, 16, 32 or 64 bars, or play the full beat. Eight bars is plenty for a first run.

  5. Rap along with the ball

Words scroll up with the music. Follow the ball, say something that leads into each word and land the rhyme on the beat.

  6. Check the Game Review

When the session ends the review shows how long you went, how many bars you rapped and your current day streak. Replay the same words, or replay with new ones.

Examples

A first AABB couplet

Words on screen: night and light. Beats one to three of bar one: "City never sleeps so I stay out all". Beat four: night. Bar two: "Chasing every streetlamp, chasing every". Beat four: light. The meaning is loose. The timing is what counts at this stage.

When you freeze

If you cannot think of a setup, say the rhyme word anyway on beat four and fill the earlier beats with a filler such as "yeah, uh, let me say". Keeping the ball moving matters more than the perfect line.

Common mistakes

  • Starting the line too late

If you only begin talking on beat three, the rhyme word gets squeezed. Start your setup on beat one, even if it is simple.

  • Trying to be clever too early

Plain sentences are fine at the start. Arrive on time first, then improve the writing.

  • Jumping to AAAA straight away

AAAA needs four rhymes for one sound. Start with AABB and All Words, then climb the difficulty ladder.

  • Ignoring audio lag

If the ball looks late or early, calibrate it in Settings under Correct Audio Lag or Ball Sync. Bluetooth headphones add the most delay.

How to play The Rhyme Game: FAQ

Do I need rapping experience to play The Rhyme Game?

No. The official FAQ says a short tutorial walks new players through the grid, the ball and the rhymes. Starting on All Words with an AABB scheme gives you every rhyme so you only fill the gaps.

How long should a first session be?

Eight bars is enough for a first run. A day counts toward your streak once you rap at least 8 bars, so a short session still counts.

Does The Rhyme Game score my voice?

The official how to play and FAQ pages describe a Game Review with session length, bars and streak. They describe REC as an optional video recording feature. They do not describe automatic grading of your rhymes. Features can change, so check the current app. Some third party clones do score timing or typed answers.

Can I play on a computer?

Yes. The official browser version lives at play.therhymegame.com and is built for desktop. On a phone, the official FAQ recommends using the app.
