The Rhyme Game rules

Last updated · Written by The Rhyme Game Wiki

Quick answer

The core rule is simple: land your rhyme word on beat four of each bar. Everything else is a setting. Fill mode (All Words, First Only, Last Only, No Words) controls how much help you get, and the scheme (AABB, ABAB, AAAA, No Rhymes) controls which lines rhyme.

Short explanation

The Rhyme Game does not have a long rulebook. It has one timing rule and a handful of settings that change how hard that rule feels. This page lists the official mechanics in one place.

All mechanics here come from the official how to play page and the official FAQ. If the app changes, the official pages win.

Fill modes

Fill mode decides how many of the rhyme slots show a word. It is the main way to make the game easier or harder.

Fill modeWhat you seeWhat it trains
All WordsEvery rhyme word is shownFlow and timing. The easiest place to start.
First OnlyThe first word of each rhyme pair, so you find the rhymeThinking of rhymes on the spot
Last OnlyOnly the word you are rhyming intoSetup and punchline, writing toward a target
No WordsA blank gridPure freestyle on the scheme

Rhyme schemes

SchemePatternFeel
AABBLines 1 and 2 rhyme, then 3 and 4The default. Classic couplets.
ABABLines 1 and 3 rhyme, lines 2 and 4 rhymeYou hold a rhyme in your head across a line
AAAAAll four lines share one rhymeHard. You need four rhymes for one sound.
No RhymesScheme switched offFlow practice with no rhyme prompts

Game modes

  • Classic (Single Beat): one beat, a set number of bars, then a review screen. This is the main mode.
  • Endless (Endless Playlist): the beats keep coming one after another. Rap as long as you like.
  • Tap Mode: rap along to any music you hear. Tap the rhythm, or type in a BPM, and the game plays along.

Streaks and tools

Rap at least 8 bars in a day and that day counts toward your streak. Stats track your current and longest streak, a 28 day calendar, total bars, games played and your most played beats.

The app also includes a Rhyme Dictionary, a Random Word Generator for practicing away from a beat, and a Beat Library you can sort by name, artist, BPM or genre.

Step by step: climbing the difficulty ladder

  1. Beginner: All Words with AABB

Every rhyme is shown. You focus on timing and on arriving at each word on beat four.

  2. Intermediate: First Only with AABB

You now find the matching rhyme yourself for each pair.

  3. Advanced: Last Only with AABB

You write toward a target word, which is how setup and punchline work.

  4. Expert: Last Only with AAAA

You hold one sound across four lines and need several rhymes for it.

  5. Beyond: No Words

Freestyle onto the scheme with no prompts at all.

Examples

AABB with All Words

Bar 1 ends on "beat", bar 2 ends on "street", bar 3 ends on "flow", bar 4 ends on "go". Two couplets, two sounds.

ABAB with First Only

You see "stay" on line 1 and "mind" on line 2. You supply a rhyme for "stay" on line 3 (say "day") and a rhyme for "mind" on line 4 (say "find").

Common mistakes

  • Treating the settings as a score

Harder settings are not better or worse. They train different skills. Use the one that gives you a fair challenge today.

  • Moving up the ladder too fast

If you skip a rung you will spend the whole session stuck on one bar. Move up when the current rung feels easy.

  • Expecting grading rules that the official app does not describe

The official pages describe a review of time, bars and streak. They do not describe timing scores or typed rhyme checks. Those belong to some clone sites.

The Rhyme Game rules: FAQ

What is the one rule of The Rhyme Game?

Land your rhyme on beat four. A bar is four beats long, and the rhyme word sits at the end of the bar.

How is a streak counted?

Rap at least 8 bars in a day and that day counts. Play on consecutive days to grow the streak.

What is the hardest setting?

The official ladder ends at Last Only with AAAA. After that, No Words removes every prompt.

Are there time limits per bar?

The beat is the clock. Each bar is four beats, so your speed depends on the BPM of the beat you pick. See the BPM guide.
